Internship Information

Intern Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00, 40 hours per week


Dates of Internship: 5/21/2018 through 12/31/2018


Description of Internship:

Division Accounting provides services to Operations in the areas of budget planning, budget variance reporting, accounts payable and receivable, and contract administration. Interns will spend the summer learning process of the department as well as taking the lead on special projects.


Interns can expect to gain the following from this internship:

  • Budget Planning - Compiling and reviewing data, preparing reports, and attending meetings during the three-year planning process
  • Budget Variance – Analyzing division expenses compared to current budget and making forecast recommendations for year-end projections
  • Overview of the Procurement, Accounts Payable and, Accounts Receivable processes
  • Present end-of-year internship presentation to division management. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Intern candidate must be an actively enrolled student at an accredited college and/or university.
  • Candidates must be in at least their sophomore year and must be majoring in fields related to the Company.
  • Commit to interning for a minimum of ten (10) weeks and a 40-hour work week for the summer program.
  • Internship positions are filled through our staffing partner; Interns are not direct employees of Southwest Gas.
  • Additionally, candidates must meet the following criteria:
    • Cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0
    • Most recent semester/quarter GPA greater than or equal to 3.0
    • Unofficial transcript submittal is required

In addition to the minimum qualifications, our Accounting Intern Candidate must meet the following:

  • Analytical – developing recommendations based upon data and creating trend analysis
  • Communication – verbal and written
  • Public speaking/presentation skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Analytical/quantitative skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills


Additional qualifications should include: 

  • Moderate to expert level experience with Microsoft Excel or other related database
  • Business Administration or Accounting degree, or related, in progress
  • Completed accounting 101
  • Ability to work in teams and independently

Salary Details

$18.00 - $21.00/hour
